Acid-Resistant Brick Linings: The Joint Is Part of the System
Chemical resistance belongs to the complete lining, not just the brick. Membrane, mortar, joint profile, workmanship, and drainage all decide whether acid finds the substrate.

An acid-resistant brick can pass its laboratory test and still belong to a failed lining. Chemical-service construction works as a system. The liquid only needs one open joint, cracked corner, unsealed penetration, or drainage pocket to reach what the brick was supposed to protect.
Start with the exposure
Identify the chemical, concentration, temperature, contaminants, immersion or splash condition, cleaning method, and thermal cycling. Chemical compatibility tables are useful, but service mixtures and elevated temperatures can behave differently from a single room-temperature reagent.
The substrate also matters. Concrete movement, steel flexure, residual moisture, and surface contamination affect the membrane and bedding layer long before the brick face is challenged.
Brick and mortar are a pair
Brick provides a durable wear surface and reduces the chemical load reaching the membrane. Mortar closes the paths between units and transfers load. The mortar must suit the same exposure, joint thickness, cure conditions, and installation temperature.
Thin, fully filled joints are usually the goal. Empty backs, intermittent buttering, and wide corrective joints create reservoirs and weak paths. Keep bond patterns consistent and avoid continuous joints through multiple layers.
Details attract failures
Corners, sumps, drains, nozzles, supports, and transitions concentrate movement and are difficult to lay. Pre-plan cuts and specials so the installer is not solving three-dimensional chemistry with a hammer at the end of the shift.
Membranes need continuity and protection during bricklaying. Test or inspect them as specified before covering, because access becomes dramatically less convenient after the first course.
In chemical service, a lining is only as resistant as its easiest path through the joints and details.
Cure before exposure
Many resin or silicate mortar systems require controlled curing before chemical service. Temperature and humidity affect the process. Follow the system supplier's instructions rather than assuming that a hard surface means complete cure.
