Refractory Storage: Keep Water Out Before You Put Water In
Castable bags are not warehouse furniture. Dry storage, intact packaging, stock rotation, and batch traceability protect material performance before installation begins.
Refractory quality can be lost without a furnace, mixer, or badly aimed burner. A leaking roof and an unlabelled pallet can do the job quietly. Storage is part of installation quality because the material arriving at the mixer is only as good as the material protected in the store.
Hydraulic products dislike accidental water
Castables and cement-containing mortars can react with moisture from leaks, damp floors, condensation, or humid air entering damaged bags. Lumps, crusting, or shortened working time are warning signs. Breaking lumps and using the bag anyway does not reverse hydration.
Store bags under cover, off the floor, away from walls that can transmit moisture, and within the supplier's stated conditions. Protect them during site transport too. Five minutes in rain is still rain.
Age and identity matter
Use first-in, first-out rotation while respecting stated shelf life. Keep batch labels readable and record where each batch is installed. If a later question arises, traceability separates a material issue from a process issue.
Do not combine half bags of uncertain identity. Similar colours and packaging do not make two products interchangeable, particularly when binders, additives, or aggregate grading differ.
Bricks and fibre need care as well
Bricks can chip, crack, or absorb contamination through poor handling. Fibre products should remain dry, clean, and protected from compression or tearing. Resin and chemical-bonded systems may have tighter temperature and shelf-life requirements.
The cheapest place to prevent a refractory failure is often the warehouse door.
Quarantine doubt
Separate wet, damaged, expired, or unidentified material. Ask the supplier before use and test where appropriate. The cost of discarding a questionable bag is easier to explain than removing a questionable lining.
