A Hot Spot Is a Message: Reading the Shell Before It Gets Louder
One temperature reading is an alarm. A mapped trend, operating context, and lining drawing turn it into evidence about what may be happening behind the shell.

A hot spot on a furnace shell is not a complete diagnosis, but it is never just decoration. It may indicate lining thinning, an open joint, detached insulation, metal penetration, local flame impingement, or a change in operation. The pattern and trend provide the useful part of the message.
Establish a baseline
Shell temperatures depend on internal temperature, ambient conditions, wind, emissivity, load, and construction. Compare like with like. A thermal image taken after a cold start cannot be judged against one taken at steady production without context.
Create repeatable survey routes and marked measurement locations. Record operating state, production rate, internal temperature, weather, and instrument settings. Trends across comparable runs are more informative than isolated numbers.
Shape suggests cause
A narrow hot line may follow a joint. A regular grid can correspond to anchors or structural details. A broad warm area may suggest insulation loss, while a rapidly growing concentrated spot can indicate serious local damage.
Overlay the thermal map on lining drawings. Burner positions, penetrations, expansion joints, supports, and previous repairs help explain why heat appears where it does.
Verify safely
Do not approach or cool a hot shell without an approved procedure. Sudden external cooling can introduce stress, and the apparent surface may conceal a more severe internal condition. Escalation limits should be defined by equipment owners and competent engineers before the alarm occurs.
Other evidence can include shell discolouration, distortion, unusual sounds, process instability, dust leakage, and changes in cooling demand. Combine signals rather than relying on one camera pixel.
A hot spot becomes actionable when its temperature, area, growth rate, and operating context are recorded together.
Close the loop at shutdown
Mark the location physically and on drawings so inspectors can find the corresponding hot-face area. Compare the observed damage with the thermal history and update alarm thresholds or survey frequency.
