Custom Refractory Brick Sizes: Put Tolerances on the Drawing

A nominal brick size is not enough for special shapes; record dimensions, taper, orientation, and permitted variation.

A custom brick enquiry often starts with a familiar nominal size. That may work for a straight brick, but an arch or taper shape needs more information to fit the lining. A drawing with dimensions and tolerances prevents a made-to-order shape from being judged against an unstated assumption.

Define every controlling face

Show length, width, both thicknesses on a taper, angles or radii, and the orientation of the hot face. Mark whether a dimension is before or after any machining. Identify faces that contact adjoining units and the joint thickness used in the design.

Agree how the lot will be checked

State the permitted deviation and inspection method for critical dimensions. Include the drawing revision on the order and packing label. A verbal correction to one dimension is easy to lose when tooling, production, and site teams are working from different copies.
